Grilled Cheese from Beer Belly

Every couple of months we come across a few dishes so fantastic that we can't help but share with our favorite people (you). Without further ado, please enjoy the 10 dishes that we think you should eat as soon as possible.

Gjelina Take Away's breakfast sandwich
GTA is good for more than afternoon farro salads and evening squash blossom pizzas. The star of their morning show is the breakfast sandwich. Here's how it goes down: A fluffy, piping hot house-made English muffin is stuffed with kale that has been braised in a red wine vinegar with garlic, salt, and pepper. The next layer is a fried egg, then a slice of Gruyere and three slices of Niman Ranch bacon. But the pièce de résistance is the addition of their house-made magic-like hot sauce. With just one bite, you will never look at your old breakfast sandwich the same way again.

Bhindi masala at Akbar
While it’s not on menu (MDR location, only), that doesn’t mean you can’t order it. Go on, ask for the bhindi masala—okra in a tangy and slightly spicy sauce (not nearly as heavy as traditional masala) with caramelized onions. This dish is so addictive, you might be glad it's not on the menu—more for you, right?

Fried chicken skillet at Plan Check
Small but mighty, this skillet hits all the right notes: tangy, crunchy, sweet, spicy, creamy, and extremely moist. Tender pieces of chicken, ready to fall off the bone, are held together by crisp batter, while creamy house-made gravy and sweet mashed potatoes are perfect pairings to punch flavor into each bite. The pickled okra accompaniment is a nice end of meal palate cleanser with a little spice and vinegar love.

Char-siu tsukemen at Tsujita LA
These noodles are thick, chewy, rich, and even better when dunked into the pork-flavored dipping sauce. The sauce isn't meant to be enjoyed on its own, but we do it anyway. This dish also comes with a lime that adds some nice acidity to help cut through the richness of the noodles and broth.

Locro de quinoa at Picca
Even if you already know about this dish, we thought it was high time to remind you. The fact that Zarate thought of making a quinoa pumpkin stew consisting of corn, fried egg, Parmesan cheese, and crispy tomato is absolute genius. It may not look like much, but you will be swooning after this salty, rich, comfort dish.

Grilled cheese at Beer Belly
Expect four types of cheese (Cheddar, Asiago, Gruyere, and goat), plus bacon and maple syrup; this behemoth is a seriously decadent nod to all your favorite breakfasts in one bite. Best shared, unless you want to get rolled out.

Alpaca stew at Mo-chica
This fancy name is short for stew served over tagliatelle, with aji amarillo sauce, and topped with a fried organic fertile egg. Mix the egg with noodles and meat for a creamy and hearty dish that was previously an unlikely candidate for your reason to go to Mo-chica (hello, ceviche), but now is.

Flan at Mercado
OC Weekly calls this dish "the best flan in the universe"—and they jut may be right, but in truth, we haven't done a universal flan taste test. We did go check out this super-hyped-up flan, and to our pleasant surprise, it was the best we've had. Fluffy, silky, and smooth, mellowing the sweet caramel.

Crispy garlic fish at Lum-Ka-Naad
Expect a whole pompano—head, tail, fins, and all—arriving piping hot with a layer of crunchy fried garlic and a saucer of top-secret spicy seafood sauce for the dipping, pouring, and devouring.

Roasted chicken at Petros
The roast chicken at Petros should be re-named "the most addictive half chicken in the South Bay." Crisp skin gives ways to salty Epirus feta and juicy tender chicken that has been marinated forever in Greek Mountain Oregano and olive oil. The grilled, salty, and lemony potatoes don’t hurt matters.
