Asia de Cuba

Asia de Cuba
By Tess Minsky
The Mondrian Hotel is still chic (and crazy fun) after all these years. Even if you're not a softy when it comes to views, this one is here for everybody. But add a special BBE prix fix menu—the best from the kitchen of Chef Troy Thompson—and you’ll start to swoon. Tuna pica (tuna tartare) has the heat and sharpness you want, but the lightly fried wonton crisps hold their own without taking down the entire dish. A winning calamari salad becomes an unlikely combo of bananas, hearts of palm, chayote, and radicchio; miso glazes tender Alaskan butterfish, and where else but Asia de Cuba would black beans go so nicely in edamame salad with tempura shishito peppers. As for Cuban barbecue, expect Thai coconut sticky rice and fruit salsa with tamarind sauce. Even If you're over going out, this place will remind you that it's vital to get a dose of a real Hollywood scene once in a while. After all, we do live here.
