Seated amongst the oversized cloisonné cranes that guard the tables, celebs and just plain food-lovers alike have been hiding in the refined atmosphere of Chinois since the trend-setting restaurant opened back in 1983, making it more of a local gathering place then a glitzy hot spot. The family-style menu is a toast to Wolfgang Puck’s legacy of—dare we say it?—real fusion, the original variety that inspired a generation of chefs soon after, including Chinois’ own Rene Mata. In honor of the Santa Monica hideout’s 28th anniversary, Chinois is offering BBE members a special bonus—an order of Chinois chicken salad with two vegetable spring rolls, plus a Chinois martini (with Ultimat vodka) or a glass of Champagne. One bite of the chicken salad—a tender breast topped with crunchy wontons and lavished with savory miso vinaigrette—and you'll realize why it has been a staple here for nearly three decades. The regular menu also boasts favorites like grilled salmon, served with chilled black-and-gold noodles; whole sizzling catfish with ginger and ponzu sauce; and the show-stopping Shanghai lobster, a curried, crimson crustacean towering over a mountain of crisp spinach. Oh, and you’ll like the martini, too.
