Fanny

425 Graham Ave., Brooklyn (Williamsburg)   map

Fanny
By James Cury
The decor is downright seductive: Dark brown wooden tables, red brick walls, high ceilings, and dangling filament lightbulbs work magic, producing a warm, artsy vibe in the rustic-but-contemporary interior. Fanny is the perfect spot for a casual dinner date or Sunday brunch with friends, assuming you want cozy bistro fare, classics like salad Niçoise, roasted chicken, pork chops, steak frites, mussels in white-wine sauce—you get the idea. The wonderfully charred octopus, braised in red wine and served over warm lentil salad with chorizo, is one of the stellar dishes, and, unlike the brief menu, the drinks selection boasts dozens of terrific French wines, European and Brooklyn beers, and a half dozen custom cocktails. For a secret rendezvous (or the chance that you’ll actually get to sit in an outdoor garden), the location can’t be beat: Graham Street, in subdued East Williamsburg, is situated far from the frenzy of the Bedford and Broadway bar scenes.
