Four Café

2122 ½ Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock   map

Four Café
Eagle Rock is known for its laid-back hipster vibe, and Four Café, a casual new spot on the main drag along Colorado Boulevard, fits this hood like a well-worn hoodie. Here, co-owner Corey Wilton greets customers behind a glass counter full of oatmeal-raisin cookies and apple tarts, while his wife, Michelle Wilton, heads the kitchen, turning out pressed sandwiches, hearty soups and a mélange of salads. Everything here is done with an eye toward environmental responsibility—the food is organic, the appliances energy efficient. Even the wood in the dining room is reclaimed (Corey is also an artist, and he supervised the design). To bite into the grilled asparagus sandwich with shaved fennel, avocado, feta and arugula is to taste California in all its glory.

The tables are all about the same, but they fill up over lunch hour, so try to eat on the early side if you don’t want to wait.

The couple named the café “Four” because they plan to change the menu every season. They say it’s also an important number for them: It was four years ago that they were married, bought a house in Eagle Rock, and got their beloved dog, Echo.
