San Francisco is famously foodie, and Berkeley is the motherland of modern California cuisine, but if you wanna get in on the ground level of the next big food scene, Oakland’s where it's at. Touring through Jack London Square and the Historic Warehouse District, you’ll stroll through one of Oakland’s oldest neighborhoods, sampling sweet and savory bites from establishments old and new, from stick-to-your-ribs soul food to bacon-crusted caramel popcorn, refreshing your palate with sips of wine made on premises in one of the neighborhood’s urban wineries. Morsels of local history and culture sate the hungry mind in between bites, leaving belly and brain full. Best of all, the three-and-a-half hour walk will almost be enough to burn the calories you consume. Almost.

on tour

Kicking things off with a bite at hip Chop Bar, the meandering walk takes you through the historic produce market to Home of Chicken & Waffles, once affiliated with LA’s famous Roscoe’s, where you’ll sample their eponymous dish. Hive Studio marks the spot to discuss First Fridays/Art Murmur while snacking on bacon-caramel popcorn, washed down a few steps later with a couple sips of Urban Legend’s wines. Spicy Peruvian ceviche and sweet churros with Mexican chocolate exemplify Bocanova’s pan-Latin sensibilities, and Miette’s chewy macarons are the perfect sweet ending to the tour. Along the way, the guide pulls out even more comestibles from her seemingly bottomless bag of tricks.

retail therapy

There are some welcome opportunities to flex your plastic on the tour. Some adhere to the food theme, like bottles of Urban Legend’s wine or boxes of Baia Pasta’s artisanal hard pasta, but a stop at lOAKal tempts the wallet with a wide array of jewelry, apparel, and other wares made by local artists.
