SF–Elizabeth Falkner's exclusive $45 BBE Hotel California-inspired menu at Orson

Elizabeth Falkner grew up with Hotel California streaming from the radio and still finds the song as fascinating as it is creepy. But by reviving our collective memory of that Eagles hit with an exclusive cocktail-pairing menu for BBE at her SoMa restaurant, Orson, she may be working out some of her demons. With drinks from mixologist Ian Adams, the exclusive prix fixe includes Can’t Kill the Beast, a slab of maple-glazed heritage pork with a bourbon and mint cocktail. A bloody Mary gazpacho has spicy notes echoed in the Spirit of 1969, a gin-based drink with cinnamon, watermelon and tomato. Last Thing I Remember pairs black olive ice cream with plums and smoked streusel; the latter picks up on the peaty single-malt scotch in the dessert cocktail. After first making fame for her artful pastry creations at Citizen Cake, Falkner expanded into savory over the years, and Orson’s food brims with modern California style. With its moody, modern décor and films flickering on the wall, Orson is the perfect backdrop for the evocative pairings. The only thing missing is the pink champagne on ice.

A former steel foundry warehouse, the two-story restaurant has a ton of seating. The horseshoe-shaped bar is great for people watching, while the smaller seating area tucked to the right of it is better for dates.
