Superbly sourced sweets and savory treats from around the globe

By Carissa Chesanek

Thoughtfully designed gift baskets and boxes brimming with epicurean delicacies have long been go-to presents for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays, and Chelsea Market Baskets has perfected their take on this tradition with a smorgasbord of indulgences from around the world. Driven by a passion for finding high-quality, innovative products and carefully working them into exquisite gift preparations, owner David Porat started the New York–based specialty food and gift shop in the Chelsea Market in 1997. Today, Chelsea Market Baskets offers a tempting array of artfully presented international foods.

One of their signature items is the Chelsea Classic Sweet & Savory Tower, which mixes salty snacks like Kent & Fraser cheese biscuits from the UK and Torres black truffle potato chips from Spain with sweet treats like the the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth Shortbread House of Edinburgh mini shortbread biscuits. And let’s not forget the Summerdown chocolate mint crisps, made with peppermint oil farmed in England that imparts a sweet flavor without any bitter finish.

Another must is the Chelsea Market Sweets package, presented in a rustic wire hamper and stocked with treats from Chelsea Market neighbors, like hand-rolled rugelach pastry from Ruthy's Bakery and lemon-poppyseed cake from Sarabeth's Kitchen, plus Chelsea Market Baskets’ own strawberry and Champagne jam—the perfect complement to your morning toast and coffee.

Word on the street

I Heart NY

With their brick-and-mortar home in Chelsea Market, these guys clearly have a sweet spot for the city, and show their love with a special section (both online and in store) dedicated to New York–inspired gifts. For the friend moving to the Big Apple, send over the NY Welcome Bag with all the essentials every newcomer needs: New York City water, black-and-white cookies, and Martin's pretzels, all presented in a subway map tote that makes navigating underground a cinch.
