Our 7 favorite grain bowls in LA

By Grace Jidoun

Angelenos care passionately about their food, and there’s nowhere else that healthy whole grains and international flavors come together so well. From simple, clean eating to mind-bending flavor mash-ups, here are seven of our favorite grain bowls around town to check out right now.

Jessica Koslow, the woman behind the trend, is still at the top of her game at this minimalist Silver Lake cafe. Try the bowl that started it all: the sorrel pesto brown rice bowl. Or catch a fleeting, seasonal offering, like the popular chicken porridge.

Gjusta
This is the type of artisanal bakery that you wish was on your block, and their breakfast grain bowls are equally dreamy. Try the signature grain bowl, jazzed up with spicy kimchi, mustard greens, turnips, and daikon—a combo that will jolt you awake. Gjusta also gets bonus points for serving breakfast until 5 p.m.

Yes, this is the home of the 20-course Italian-Japanese omakase from chef Josef Centeno, but don't overlook the lunch menu, which bursts with top-notch, customizable grain bowls (pictured above). Start with a base (barley, faro, quinoa, or rice) and then layer on goodies like seasonal vegetables, seafood crudo, or lamb curry.

Superba

Superba
This is the kind of cafe where you order a turkey sandwich and it comes with pickled chiles, harissa yogurt, and root veggie chips. So it’s no surprise the grain bowl here is intriguing. A slaw made from collard greens, cashews, and quinoa is crowned with an egg and can be further garnished with chicken, avocado, or seared tuna.

Lincoln
Just like the food, the atmosphere at this Pasadena gem is casual and charming, with wildflower arrangements and light streaming in from the patio. Meanwhile, the farro bowl—an unexpected mix of kale, fennel, chickpeas, romesco, and almonds—will leave you feeling amazing, like you've just stepped out of yoga class.

Ollo
This family-owned Med-Italian spot brings a crazy vibrant menu to Malibu, and gets extra props for its farm-to-table ethos and stylish setting. The wild herb salmon bowl is a must-order, mixing pomegranate, faro, wild rice, tabbouli, and a cilantro-lime vinaigrette for a bright take on Mediterranean flavors.
