SF’s best happy hours you can enjoy outside

By Marcia Gagliardi

It’s rare for San Franciscans to get a chance to enjoy outdoor patios and terraces without a sweater-and-scarf combo, but indian summer is coming, so our odds are improving of not getting frostbite—or getting blown away. That calls for a celebration, with happy hour, while it’s still light out and when there are drink and food deals aplenty. Here are six great outdoor spots with happy hours to hit during the week.

Uno Dos

Uno Dos Tacos
A favorite among downtown workers (buckets of beer—six beers—for $25 will do that), Uno Dos has a spacious outdoor patio with room for groups. Margaritas are $6.75 each ($27 for a pitcher), draft beer is $4, and the $5 happy hour deals on chips and guacamole, tostaditos with carnitas, tinga flautas, gorditas with refried beans, and a cheesy quesadilla frita are all winners. Same goes for the lack of a stop time. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. until closing.

El Techo
Take the elevator up to the best rooftop party in San Francisco, complete with heat lamps, windscreens, and a stellar view of the city. To top it off, you can’t beat the drink deals—well-made cocktails like their margarita (Pueblo Viejo, lime, Combier) for $7, a tequila flight for $13, a range of beers for $4, and a sangria pitcher for $18. Snack on fantastic beef empanadas, fried chicken thighs, and classic guacamole and chips, all just $5 each. Heads-up: There can be a line on extra-nice evenings. Happy hour is Monday through Friday 4 to 6 p.m.

Jones

Jones
Near Union Square lies this spacious and sunny patio, surrounded with plants and tucked up and away from the busy city streets—even the bar is flanked by big window doors that open up onto the terrace. Nearby workers and residents are well acquainted with the busy happy hour here, with deals like $4 happy hour beer, $5 red or white wine, and a $5 cocktail special—all super wallet-friendly. There’s also a rotating list of bites, like tater tots with chipotle aïoli for $6, or mac-and-cheese croquettes for $9. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday 5 to 7 p.m.

Sessions
This spacious Presidio gastropub is winning at patios, with its beautiful view of the surrounding green grounds. On top of that, the $1.50 local oysters are a steal, and go perfectly with the $4 beer specials. And this place pours the good stuff. The $4 crispy chicken biscuit slider is a must, with lemon-dill honey butter and Fresno chile sauce. Wine drinkers will find $5 specials, while there are $8 well cocktails for those who want something stronger. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Stem Kitchen & Garden

Stem Kitchen & Garden
For a stunning view of the Bay in what feels like your dream backyard—complete with fire pits, a bocce court, and an abundant garden—come by this Mission Bay restaurant for happy hour. You’ll find three quality beers and a cider all between $4 and $5, wine on tap and red or white sangria all for $7, and well drinks for $7, too. Some bites are in the works, but it’s mostly liquid for now… buuuut Monday through Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. there’s a lighter menu that overlaps with happy hour that includes a chef’s daily charcuterie board, geranium-marinated olives, and patatas bravas. The regular happy hour runs Monday through Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m.

It’s a rarity in San Francisco to be able to lounge poolside, but here’s your spot. Part of the Phoenix Hotel, this Tenderloin bar has an extensive and creative menu of $5 bites—think fried oyster bao with remoulade, coleslaw, and Tabasco, or fried Brussels sprouts with spicy gochujang sauce, pine nuts, and Parmesan. A daily selection of $5 beer, $5 sauvignon blanc or malbec, $5 well drinks, and a $7 boilermaker (shot of whiskey and beer) will get your evening started. Even better, grab a friend and get the Three for Thirty$: a bottle of rosé, patatas bravas with spicy tomato sauce, and Japanese croquettes. Happy hour is Tuesday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., and on Thursday there’s even a second reverse happy hour from 9 to 11 p.m. Bonus!
