Where to eat before going to the funniest comedy clubs in SF

By Claire Margine

If you’re heading out to a local San Francisco comedy club, why not turn it into a delicious date night? Prepare for some side-splitting laughter with drinks, snacks, or dinner before the show. Here are seven spots within easy walking distance of some of the city's favorite comedy spots.

Wayfare Tavern
Catching a show at The Punchline? Start your night off right with classic California tavern fare. While Wayfare Tavern is known for their fried chicken, the not to miss item is The Tavern burger, which is piled high with smoked bacon and local Brie. But if you’re in the mood for a smaller bite, Wayfare Tavern is also known for their Petaluma Farms deviled eggs and roasted bone marrow. Whatever you choose, pair it with a drink from the full bar or extensive wine list.

Kokkari Estiatorio
Make it a fancy night out by reserving a table at this elegant, cavernous Greek restaurant. The soutzoukakia, grilled lamb meatballs in a tangy spiced tomato sauce, and the avgolemono, a traditional egg lemon soup, are both can’t-miss experiences. In the rustic atmosphere, complete with dangling chandeliers and tables full of cozy armchairs, you can relax with a bottle of Greek wine selected from Kokkari’s tremendous wine list. This is a hard place to snag a table, so try to make a reservation at least a week ahead of time.

Bocadillos
Nothing says date night like a big order of shared tapas and a bottle of wine. Pile your warm pan con tomate with salty, rich jamón serrano and bite into a sticky sweet bacon wrapped date, or devour a plate of patatas bravas with Romesco aïoli. In the mood for something sweet? Go for the fresh profiteroles with cinnamon ice cream. Happy hour is from 3 to 6 p.m. and includes $4 beer and cider, $7 wine by the glass, and five tapas that you won’t see on the menu at dinner. Bocadillos closes early on Mondays, so skip this spot if you’re catching a Monday night show.

La Trappe Cafe
Beer lovers, rejoice: You can now add a beer-fueled, Belgian food adventure to your comedy night. La Trappe’s kitchen is open until 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and the menu is full of traditional Belgian bar food. You can’t go wrong sticking with the mussels and fries, just don’t forget to order a few dipping sauces to pair with your piping hot frites. Of course, the main attraction here is La Trappe’s 15 rotating taps. Check out their extensive beer book of over 300 beers with many cellared on premise, and you can even skip dinner and stop by post-show for a round of beers and a warm Liège waffle.

Bodega
Bodega is the ideal place to grab pre-show drinks and hearty, vibrant snacks. Brussels sprouts get a fresh bar-friendly makeover, piled high with feta, cilantro, and jalapeños, and the charcuterie platter—a luscious tangle of Parma prosciutto, coppa, and mortadella—is just waiting for its Instagram spotlight. The choripán, an Argentine sausage sandwich laced with chimichurri, is a must-order, and the great wine list rounds out the evening.

Hogwash
Beer fans and bar food fanatics, Hogwash is the place for you, with a large menu of constantly changing draft beers, and knowledgeable bartenders ready to make a recommendation based on your personal brew desires. The menu offers a San Francisco twist on traditional German bierhaus eats. Don’t skip the fried pickles or the Sheepish, a spicy lamb sausage sandwich piled high with pickled beet relish. Have a vegetarian in your crew? The Hogless, a vegetarian sausage sandwich, is decadent and flavorful enough for meat-lovers to want to steal a bite. With big communal tables and tiny bar tables, you can choose between a rowdy or more intimate vibe.

Rambler
Build your own charcuterie board, complete with salt-cured foie gras, or customize a dozen oysters as you select your favorites from the shells menu. In the mood for a classic date order? Split the bone-in rib eye for two, paired with caramelized onion–bacon potato puree and a decadent Bordelaise sauce. From draft beer to mezcal to Chartreuse, the drinks menu has a little something for everyone. Rambler is open until 11 p.m. on the weekends and 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday—come in for a post-show drink on Friday or Saturday, when the bar stays open until midnight.
