Elyse Winery

By Sean Timberlake

Napa Cabernets can sometimes be monsters that you practically have to chew before you swallow. Not so at Elyse Winery. With grapes from the Morisoli Vineyard, deep in the heart of the valley, Elyse produces Cabs that show both strength and elegance. The 2006 vintage brims with aromas of dark fruit like currants and plum, earth and a hint of rose, followed by flavors of dark berries and vanilla, with an intriguingly spicy finish. The soft tannins fill the mouth without that cottony mouthfeel. Strong enough to stand up to roasts of beef or lamb, this Cab would also play nicely with rustic stews. Also from Morisoli Vineyard is a Zinfandel, more playful than its sister Cab; it’s a big wine with complex fruity and spicy flavors and even a hint of coffee. Both these wines are structured enough to lie down for a good aging or be ready to drink in the time it takes to get from the vineyard to your doorstep.

An Award Winner

The Elyse 2006 Morisoli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 90-plus points in The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker, who notes that “it should age effortlessly for 15-plus years.”
