When most of us crave serious Chinese food, we head for the San Gabriel Valley. But for Chinese with a heaping helping of West Hollywood glamour, not to mention shocking-pink booths and barstools, there’s Philippe, the luxurious Chinese restaurant from a longtime disciple of Michael “Mr.” Chow. Philippe, the man and the nascent empire, is already keeping pace with the master, having matched Michael Chow with a total of six restaurants in LA, New York, Las Vegas and Miami. At the latest Philippe, the food is as refined as a Beijing banquet, with Chow’s spicy sweet-and-sour sauce spooned over enormous prawns. Crispy duck is carved tableside, served with a steaming stack of translucent pancakes and umami-rich hoisin sauce. If you still have room, a three-tiered tray arrives loaded with rich desserts.

You’ll find two corner booths, one on either side of the bamboo, that are especially popular with large parties. If you’re looking for privacy, consider the long table in the adjacent wine room.
