Uniting vegetarians and meat lovers under one menu, Real Food Daily has been a trailblazer in the world of vegan, organic cuisine since 1993. Founder-chef-owner Ann Gentry has a way with plant proteins. Using seitan, tempeh, tofu and nuts, she cooks up vegan alternatives to carnivorous favorites like meatloaf and BLTs -- and the results are delicious in their own right, not just as lightened-up, cruelty-free substitutes for meat. If faux-meat is not your thing, there are Gentry's versions of pizza (gluten-free crust, of course) and fettuccine Alfredo, or straight-up salads, wraps, and stir-fries. With blonde wood and clean, modern lines, both the original Santa Monica location and the West Hollywood outpost are fittingly light and airy.

In Santa Monica, sit upstairs for quieter quarters and less to-go traffic. In West Hollywood, dine al fresco on the patio (heat lamps keep it cozy on cool nights). Note: RFD does not take reservations, so best to call ahead before you go in.
