ABC Kitchen + Cocina

Your work lunch just got a whole lot cooler

By Hannah Howard

Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina share the same distinctive, whimsical-meets-chic aesthetic, seasonal market inspiration, and thoughtful, just-a-bit quirky ethos. They also both happen to be renowned for offering some of the best lunch prix fixes in the city.

The only dilemma is where to start. At ABC Kitchen, your choices pay homage to springtime in the most delicious of ways. Carrots are roasted until caramely sweet, then plated with creamy-ripe avocado, handsome of greens, seeds for crunch, and tangy sour cream—the result transcending the sum of its lovely parts. And it’s impossible not to smile upon cutting open a pancake-sized raviolo and watching sunshine-yellow egg ooze out. Now take a bite with the meaty pork ragu and herby sage. Hallelujah.

Served with toasted almond sorbet, rhubarb, and fresh cream, the almond cake is rich with it’s nutty namesake yet feather light, like a bask-able spring day. And the salted caramel ice cream sundae topped with caramel popcorn and showered in chocolate sauce is no joke.

Alternatively, start next store at ABC Cocina, where the name betrays the culinary vision’s Spanish and Latin influence. Veggies shine here, too—crimson and orange beets beneath a shower of herbs and queso fresco; the grilled shrimp salad bringing a rainbow of radishes and sugar-sweet pear. Mezcal-smoked salmon is smooth, juicy, just spicy enough, then made refreshing with dill, cucumber, and crispy potato chips.

Why mess with a classic like the Cuban? If you can turn out a melty, happy mélange of cheesy, meaty, pickly goodness like this, we’ll forget we asked. Meanwhile, the gooey tres leches gets the greenmarket treatment with rhubarb compote.

When your elegant lunch inspire some post-meal kitchen shopping, ABC Market is a keeps you in a happy place. Everything is beautiful here, from Counter Culture brew and Mast Brothers chocolate to magazine spread–worthy table settings and serious kitchen tools. Warning: you may want to just move in and make your kitchen/home/life a little more dazzling and delicious.
