Bridging worlds, from Barcelona to Brooklyn

Just when you least expected it, corporate, courthouse-filled Downtown Brooklyn has become one of NY’s hottest neighborhoods, thanks in part to the Alamo Drafthouse. And now Boqueria, having established itself as the savior of tapas cravings and paella passions from Soho to the Flatiron to the Upper East Side, has bridged the East River to bring some of its Spanish magic into a new spot in Fort Greene, just footsteps from all the fuss.

There are two paths you can take here—by way of the interesting and inventive route, with regularly changing market specials and drinks like the rosada sangria with hibiscus-soaked strawberries. Or head toward the straight-up classics, like the marinated, seared lamb skewers, tender and bathed in an addictive herbaceous salsa verde, sprinkled with bright pickled shallots, and served atop fluffy slices of bread to catch the paprika-laden cooking oil. It’s the rare dish that you might be compelled to order two of in a single sitting.
Get the paella and let it sit for five extra minutes once it hits the table to maximize the crispy socarrat in the bottom of the pan. The shrimp and shellfish are mercifully cooked separately, so each is done to perfection. There are churros filled with Nutella if you’re staying classic to the very sweet end, while for those looking for something a bit off the beaten path, the turrón, an airy, buttery, almond and hazelnut cake which has been lightly toasted, comes served with dulce de leche ice cream. Of course, the right answer is to bridge the old and new divide, and order both.
