Hickory smoked comfort food in Culver City

Downtown Culver City has seen a major revival in the past couple years, but you can still find old school influences all over. Chop Daddy’s on Washington Boulevard, a barbecue restaurant from pit master Eric Solton, does well by the ‘80s with a “Back to the Future” mural featuring Doc Brown, as well as a Galaga and Ms. Pac Man arcade games. As for the food, well, barbecue is about as old school as it gets—meats buffeted with wood smoke—though Chop Daddy’s provides some modern touches, too, plus beer and wine.

Chop Daddy’s opened its first location in 2013 on Abbot Kinney, and the new outpost occupies a prime corner in Culver City. Chef Solton presides over the hickory smoker, and it would be best not to leave without trying the signature Belly Up sandwich—a slab of meaty, caramelized pork belly joins crisp cole slaw in a soft brioche roll.

The pulled chicken pairs well with the CD Graze salad— hearty kale topped with smoked Spanish onion, crunchy radish, sheets of savory Parmesan, and house-made croutons. You can also get your meats by the pound, but a wise play is to go for the Pig Out. This high-value platter has it all: a half-rack of pork spare ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, sweet baked beans, thick mac and cheese, and tangy tomato-based barbecue sauce. A side of poutine tots—a tater tot twist on a Quebecois French fry classic—arrives blanketed with gravy and shredded Cheddar cheese. If you feel bloated just reading this, the sweet watermelon and cucumber salad is a solid option.

Just in case you haven’t overdone it, each order comes with a small chocolate chip cookie, which can be supersized to a larger, gooier version. For the truly indulgent, look no further than the chocolate bread pudding bites—deep-fried and slathered with cinnamon sugar and caramel, they’re the best of old and new school at the same time.
