Provence meets North Africa in the West Village

There is no lovelier place in Manhattan on a sunny summer afternoon than Claudette. The whitewashed room, all pressed tin ceiling and white rattan chairs, is broken up with bursts of color—cerulean blue hints on white tiles, the lush green of palm fronds in white vases—leaving a space that feels both Provençal and tropical. 1920’s jazz plays in the background while French doors overlook the sidewalk café.

But while the musical backdrop may linger in a bygone era, the menu forges ahead with the contemporary flavors of modern Provence with North African accents. Such accents come into play in the BBE exclusive prix fixe lunch—the Corsican mint salad with arugula in a light vinaigrette with green beans and sprinkled with quinoa is light but with just enough texture and bite to stay interesting. The presence of harissa in the charred baby octopus, bathed in a smoky broth over eggplant and chickpeas, recalls sultry Morocco. Still in the African vein, there are prawns en papillote, steamed in a parchment envelope with slick couscous grains, soft whole almonds, raisins, and za’atar.

Dessert arrives: a silky, orange blossom–scented crème brûlée with the most delicate lace tuile cookie standing at attention through the middle. Just as the crème brûlée is somehow both light and decadent, so is Claudette itself. Bright and crisp while still luxurious and refined.
