Dynamo Donuts

By Alissa Merksamer

The morning fog that hovers over Dynamo Donut & Coffee’s Spanish-style kiosk in the Marina Green will immediately lift as the barista brews your Four Barrel espresso. Peruse the day’s six to seven flavor options carefully. You can go the fruity route: passion fruit milk chocolate that explodes with tropical tang, lemon thyme with its swell of lemon flavor (but no tartness), or a filled de leche number concealing milky dulce de leche and sliced bananas. Or maybe you’re in the mood for the nearly savory saffron, whose sunny interior camouflages flecks of orange zest, or the spiced chocolate with its gritty dusting of cinnamon, sugar, and smoky chipotle. The chocolate ones are cakier than the others, though all are classified as “yeast doughnuts.” Take your spoils down to the bay to watch the Golden Gate Bridge creep out of the haze. Now that’s coffee-and-a-doughnut San Francisco-style.

... on the side

what’s your jam?
Owner Sara Spearin has already started turning spring’s sweet berries into house-made jams to be injected inside her filled doughnuts. Expect to see them soon.

doggie bag it
While you sink into a cornmeal blueberry with lavender glaze doughnut, reward your pooch with a crunchy doggie version made from bacon grease, millet, and rye.

sweet seats
The best views may be along the shore, but you’ll also find a charming setting at the nearby Palace of Fine Arts, where you can have a picnic by the lake. There are also some small tables right outside the kiosk.
