Chile Pies / Green Chile Kitchenette

Chile Pies / Green Chile Kitchenette

By Alissa Merksamer

It’s no longer just about the pie at this country-cute Castro spot, but it is all about the Bueno green chile used in all dishes. A superfood that also gives a high similar to endorphins? Sweet. Inside Chile Pies (Sweet & Savory), you’ll now find Green Chile Kitchen-ette serving a handful of favorite dishes from parent restaurant Green Chile Kitchen. Expect items like home-style chicken enchiladas, which are more like a New Mexican lasagna with layers of rough house-made blue corn tortillas, enough melted jack to comfort (but not kill) you, and a plop of rich creme to cool the tang from the green chile sauce. Those same hearty tortillas are fried for the crispy tacos loaded with Mary’s chicken, Niman Ranch ground beef, or pulled pork adovada bathed in red chile sauce. Try your grilled burrito “Christmas-style” for a splash of both green and red chile sauce. And since this is a bakery, you cannot escape dessert; old-time marble layer cake gets California flair with strawberry frosting flecked with berries, and the Mexican chocolate pecan pie harmonizes with cinnamon without a bit of gooeyness.

the crowd

Grab a seat on one of the low metal swivel stools and watch the parade of young professionals and families with small kids drop by after work/school/daycare for carne asada pot pie or a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie.

eye for design
Notice the drinking trough that’s been converted into a mirror hanging above the kitchen, and the shelves lined with jars of jams ($8) and house-pickled vegetables ($10) in a space that feels like a New Mexican country general store.

pie shake, anyone?
Whole slices of pie are blended into Three Twins ice cream for an outrageous riff on a la mode. The shakes are normally eight dollars, but when there’s leftover pie, the price drops to six. Check the brown paper menu tacked to the wall to see that day’s list of discounted pie flavors.
