Ike's Place

Ike's Place

By Virginia Miller

Ike’s Place is the stuff of San Francisco legend, for overflowing sandwiches and overflowing crowds (instigating lawsuits and evictions). No question, Ike’s has left its mark on our city. Their three-page menu is loaded with hearty, sopping-but-never-soggy sandwiches. They all come bursting at the seams with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and banana peppers. Sealing the deal? Ike’s addictive Dirty sauce, a secret recipe equal parts creamy and vinegary, laden with garlic and herbs. Yes, waits can be ridiculous; but it’s better since Ike moved to his most recent location (upgraded electrical, better equipment), and waits are now under 25 minutes. What lies at the front of that queue are some of the most creative sandwiches you’ve ever seen. Ike takes a playful approach to the classics, including the Paul Reubens, a Reuben accented by poppy seed coleslaw, or the Mark Cuban, a twist on a Cubano with ham, jack cheese, jalapeños in place of pickles, and Ike’s Godfather sauce, a mild creamy horseradish Dijon mayo. Never fear, meatless eaters: vegans and vegetarians get a page each on the menu, there is a gluten-free bread choice, and no matter what you order, a bag of free of “dirty” potato chips is included with every sandwich.

Seating is limited, and there are no benches outside, so make a plan to take your sandwich with you.

Every sandwich tells a story. Some are named after local heroes, others for customers. Ike's Place even has two sandwiches in the top 9 on ESPN's Fanwiches Poll, with the Matt Cain currently ranked #5.
