Local Kitchen and Wine Merchant

By Alissa Merksamer

Open the soaring glass door, with its mash-up of different size rectangular panels, to enter an airy dining room reverberating with laughter. Tucked among high-rises on a stretch of First Street in SOMA, you’ve discovered a sleek hangout, ideal for relaxing over rustic-chic dishes and a few killer cocktails. Standouts include elephantine sea scallops with just-seared centers, and a roasted half-chicken done the right way—succulent flesh, crispy skin, and rich rosemary reduction. And don’t forget your greens: The fall spinach salad blooms with sweet beets, refreshing Asian pears, and fried matchstick leeks so snackable they ought to be a side dish themselves. Dessert stays with the classics: Molten chocolate cake surrounded by strawberries, and a stately slab of vanilla bean cheesecake with lightly bruléed sugar top.

If you’re a singleton, or just feeling social, settle at one of three high communal tables—one runs along the bar, one cuts through the restaurant, and a third spans the open kitchen. This last choice will keep you toasty from the blaze of the wood-burning oven.
