Stirring up some new excitement with deep roots

When exploring Los Angeles, there is often more than meets the eye. Nondescript warehouses might be home to a spectacular movie set, while some of the city's best restaurants and bars are set in strip malls, or have plain facades with no signs. True to form, Momed's Atwater outpost is somewhat hidden away on a quiet side street, but wildly ambient once you enter—and definitely worth the closer look.

Much like its off-the-beaten-path setting, this 2017 Diners Choice Award winner doesn't serve what one might normally expect from Mediterranean cuisine—though with a name that expands to “modern Mediterranean,” this is a place that promises to surprise as it delights, just as the original location in Beverly Hills has for the past seven years.

Menu selections range from Greek to Moroccan cuisines, putting a twist on beloved classics. Cases in point: the avocado hummus served with the Momed sampler, or the Persian eggplant, which would normally be served as a dip, but is instead deconstructed with fire-roasted eggplant in a dry yogurt reduction, mint-infused olive oil, and crispy garlic.
Specials often showcase fresh fish served whole, such as stuffed, wood-roasted Orata or Dorade seasoned with herbs from Momed's on-site garden.

And it isn't just the food that makes a statement—earlier this year, Momed's Iranian-born owner Alex Sarkissian spearheaded a series of "Immigrant Dinners" to spotlight the refugee crisis. The restaurant also recently participated in the LA Loves Puerto Rico effort with a specialty shaken daiquiri, made with Guanabana fruit–based rum liqueur, Puerto Rican rum, and a splash of sparkling wine.
