Sage: A Plant-Based Bistro

Sage: A Plant-Based Bistro

By Danny Jensen

Forget grazing on the kind of dreary, bland greens you may have previously stomached—Sage answers your cravings with a strapping and satisfying fete of California-grown vegetables. At both the original Echo Park location and the spacious Culver City iteration, Chef and documentary filmmaker (see May I Be Frank) Mollie Engelhart crafts vibrant, bountiful dishes so elaborately delectable you’ll forget how healthy they are.

Bright and clean edamame and avocado temper the earthy heat of the mountainous mole bowl. The sturdy crunch of rye bread and savory tang of a jackfruit-substituted tuna melt transport you back to the childhood comfort of rainy Sundays. Should you need to extinguish the simmer of the crispy Buffalo cauliflower, Sage pours plenty of non-dairy shakes, smoothies, freshly-pressed verdant juices, and at their Culver City location, locally crafted beers at the full bar. Of course, there’s also a rotating selection of luscious nut and coconut-based KindKreme, to sample by the scoop or the pint.

... on the side

eye for design
LA-based designer Arika Jacobs refines the rustic charms of reclaimed barnwood and rusted farm tools with a sleek sophistication with the added perk of an outdoor beer garden.

on the stereo
The bass line bounces with a steady beat provided by the Motown catalogue, from Aretha Franklin to Michael Jackson.

Medium—subtle enough to hear your dining partners proclamations to eat like this more often, but bumping enough for a satiated victory boogie.
