New create-your-plate raises the simplethings game

By Keyla Vasconcellos

There’s a good chance you’re already familiar with simplethings. With outposts in Beverly Grove, Burbank, and Westwood, this one-stop shop for savory sandwiches, salads, and delicious pies has spread the gospel of straightforward, satisfying simple pleasures all over town. And now they’ve made it even simpler to get a perfectly balanced yet affordable meal, with the new create-your-plate option.

Start by choosing from perfectly cooked skirt steak, salmon, or chipotle chicken. Add a simple salad, like the tossed greens with arugula, kale, and tomato, with Parmesan and a balsamic dressing; the butter leaf salad with buttermilk ranch dressing; or a classic Caesar. To top it off, choose a side item—the roasted baby carrots with spiced yogurt and chopped pecans, or the pesto cauliflower with Parmesan. Do order the spicy tater tots with garlic, chile flakes, and smoky chipotle aïoli.

Simplethings purists, fear not: The sandwiches and salads you expect to find on the menu have not been tampered with—and their staple chicken potpie is as comforting and hearty as your mother would make it. With its perfectly flaky crust, it’s sure to brighten any gloomy day.

Whether you’re coming by on your lunch break, or just in need of a well-composed and inexpensive dinner, simplethings specializes in lighter fare without any pretense. So while you’re waiting for your order, have seat, pick up some crayons, doodle away on the table—and look forward to that tart Key lime pie.
