Southside Spirit House

By Virginia Miller

Head south—south of Market, that is—to Southside Spirit House, where the vibe is relaxed. The roomy, wood-floored and wood-walled space is lit by skylights and lined with banquettes and tables, offering multiple options for lingering with friends or a date.

It’s hard to not be drawn to the truffly, earthy goodness of the Mission flatbread pizza, laden with mushrooms and truffle oil, and sweet with caramelized onions and Fontina cheese. On the roasted-meaty side, Dogpatch flatbread pizza mingles roasted goat cheese and sweet peppers with prosciutto over a bright pesto sauce. Meanwhile, a seasonal salad of baby spinach and wild arugula, kissed with a lemon-balsamic vinaigrette and topped with burrata and a trio of golden, chiago, and red beets, adds just the right balance of green to your table. Wash it all down with one of Southside’s playful cocktails—like a Claim Jumper, made with hoppy Hophead vodka, a slightly bitter Aperol, lime, and a refreshing splash of Big Daddy IPA beer—or another round of beers: Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA and Anchor Steam’s Zymaster Farmhouse Ale are just two of the many choices that flow from the taps.

... on the side

sweet seats
Happy hour gets super-crowded, so come on the later side to secure a table, or to snag a banquette for a cozy date. After all, it’s not easy balancing a full flatbread pizza in one hand and a beer in the other.

artsy meets sporty
Large screen TVs highlight sports, but are placed so as not to overwhelm the space. Rotating installations from local artists and warm woods walls and floors keep the space visually appealing, arty, and welcoming.
