Sweet Bar Bakery

By Christina Mueller

At Oakland’s Sweet Bar Bakery, chef Mani Niall (once Michael Jackson’s premier chef) ensures that there is something for everyone and every diet. A pumpkin-cranberry muffin, springy and moist, hits just the right tart-sweet note; the berry crumble, studded with raspberries, captures the essence of summer fruit. On the lunch menu, the organic lentil soup, bright with yellow and orange carrots, is substantial yet delicate. Lush and mellow, slow-roasted pork hits the spot with the house-made pickle while the salad bowl, a vegetable riot tossed with smoked pumpkin seeds and chèvre, thrums with I'm-doing-good-things-to-my-body energy. But do not leave without trying the oatmeal sour cherry chocolate chip cookie. Soft at the center and progressively chewier to the edges, it is the definition of what a cookie should be.

the crowd
