A local and sustainable twist to the Santa Monica pier’s longest-running restaurant

By Jen Jones Donatelli

With a prime oceanside perch on the Santa Monica Pier, this welcoming, family-owned seafood spot has made an enduring success of itself that’s impressive by any measure. Set to celebrate its 40th anniversary this January, The Albright—as it’s now known—bears the distinction of being the longest-running restaurant on the Pier. And poring over the menu, which runs from crave-worthy classics like fish and chips to an array of fresh, sustainable picks selected the day’s catch, it’s not too hard to see why.

Taste for yourself with BBE’s exclusive anniversary tasting: for $19.77 (do the math) you’ll get a cup of chowder, a mini-seafood roll duo—one shrimp, one lobster—on toasted brioche, plus fries and your choice of draft beer or fountain drink. Did we mention The Albright’s carefully curated list of craft beers? Think regional picks like SM Brew blonde ale, Green Flash West Coast IPA, and Lagunitas Pilsner. While you’re there, be sure to try other tried-and-true faves like the sourdough bread bowl, oyster platter, or beer-battered fish tacos.
Though the restaurant has been around for four decades (first as SM Pier Seafood), it assumed its current incarnation when Yunnie Kim Morena took over the helm from her parents in 2013. She chose the name The Albright—a type of fishing knot—to signify bridging the gap between the two generations, and put a new spin on the design while keeping the comfortable seaside vibe that helped the original restaurant build its reputation over all those years. Celebrate the rich history by taking a selfie with life-sized cutouts of Popeye and Olive Oyl, right before you take a gander at the saltwater tanks, to see what’s in store.
