The Pie Hole Los Angeles

Sweet and savory slices shine at The Pie Hole’s three LA locations

By Nile Cappello

Stepping through the door at this casual mecca for all things wrapped in pastry, you’re immediately made to feel at home by the friendly staff and familiar scents wafting from the kitchen. With locations in the Arts District and Pasadena, and a new outpost right in the center of it all—just off of Hollywood and Vine and half a block from the Pantages Theatre—The Pie Hole’s sweet and savory selections prove that “creative” and “inventive” make sublime partners with “homey” and “familiar,” yielding the epitome of elevated comfort.

The people behind the counter are more than helpful if you’re undecided, though you really can’t go wrong with anything here. The menu offers a diverse selection of hand pies, savory pot pies, and sweet slices that range from the modern and hip, such as the Cereal Killer cheesecake, to classic like shepherd’s pie. In addition to the everyday options, there are rotating specials that highlight the best ingredients of the season. To make sure you’ve covered the best of all worlds, order a few flavors to share—with yourself, if necessary. The more you taste, the more you’ll be convinced that every meal should come in this perfect form.
The plentiful seating and neighborhood vibe make you feel welcome to stay a while. Grab a spot at one of the shop’s many communal tables and get nostalgic for grandma’s kitchen table while waiting for your order. It’s an appropriate feeling, considering The Pie Hole’s ability to bring together people of all generations and tastes, united in their love of pie.
