Top Round Roast Beef

Keeping it real for roast beef with a side of nostalgia

By Tracy Ng

With a vibe that instantly evokes vintage diners and drive-ins, this unassuming spot perched on Olympic and La Brea only looks like it’s been there forever. Peddling good food, served quick, casual and affordable, it’s actually a slice of a bright future, brought to you by the guys behind 800 Degrees, Red Medicine, and The Church Key. With Top Round, their mission is to bring back a time when craftsmanship was a point of pride, and pave the way for fast food to continue moving in this direction.

Named for the cut that graces their signature sandwiches, Top Round slow roasts their beef over 10 hours, then serves it au jus on butter-toasted buns with seasoning. The neo-classic Bar-B-Cue goes for a local twist with jalapeño straws accompanying its chopped beef. And Top Round’s take on the Buffalo, New York specialty beef on weck—hailed by LA Weekly as a top ten regional sandwich interpretation—kicks it straight up the sinuses with “atomic horseradish” on caraway and sea salt buns.
Drinks and desserts include a dizzying array of choices, including 127 Coca-Cola flavors, a host of not-so-traditional milkshakes like strawberry-pistachio, and frozen custards—think ice cream made with egg yolk, yielding an even richer and creamier dessert. This fitting finish to your old-school meal is offered in 13 signature combos; check out the Southern Belle with addictively crisp peaches, crunchy glazed praline pecans, and smooth butterscotch, or the Elvis, with bananas, salted peanuts, and hot fudge. Even better, go DIY with your own custom creation, either sundae-style, with the fixings on top, or “concrete,” with everthing mixed into the thick and creamy custard. To finish it off pile high the whipped cream. And don’t be surprised if on your first visit, you wish you were here, like, yesterday.
