Venice Beach Wines

By Kat Odell

It started as a grab-and-go bottle shop—a shoe box nook packed from floor-to-ceiling with boutique wine from around the world and some 30 craft beers—but quickly blossomed into one of Venice’s tiniest but most beloved wine bars. And all because Oscar Hermosillo (with some help from his mother, girlfriend, and the cooks) decided to add some market-driven small plates to the mix, drawing droves of locals to the cozy, heated front patio on Rose Avenue for highly original bites, like a lambwich panini layered with melted manchego, slices of curry-rubbed lamb, onion jam, and a mint chimichurri. During the day, VBW serves as a drop-in lunch hub; at night it morphs into a dimly lit Venice hideout for couples and close friends. If you spy your fave bottle of vino in the shop, you can pop it open on the patio for a $15 corkage, to go with the cheese or charcuterie plate, some sardines, or maybe sweet and salty bacon-wrapped dates. In Venice veritas: This place just couldn’t exist anywhere else.

sweet seats

This tiny place is cramped and does not take reservations, so try to arrive before 7 PM for your best bet to snag a seat. Or pop next door to Oscar’s Cerveteca for a drink until a space opens up.

chew on this

VBW has one of the best boutique wine and craft beer lists on the west side. Don’t be afraid to try a new grape varietal (from New Mexico to South African) or give coconut beer a sip.
