Zane's — Where flip flops meet fine dining

By Katie Robbins

Zane’s is upscale urban, but stay long enough and the beachy vibe from its Hermosa location sneaks in—their motto is "flip flops and fine dining." This dichotomy of refined sophistication and laid-back revelry continues to play out in the menu, which ranges from simply grilled seafood and steaks to the hulking Hickory Burger. Among their best dishes are playful interpretations of classics like the ahi tartare, a sculptural sphere of sushi-grade tuna and avocado piled onto crunchy wontons, speckled with nutty sesame and hints of ginger. The party continues with a lavishly laid bowl of cioppino—a rich, slightly funky tomato broth, generously laden with shrimp, lobster, calamari, and soft, buttery white fish, complete with two slabs of garlic toast for sopping up all that savory goodness. Maybe you can’t work at the beach, but you can always dine there.

A plate of herb-crusted focaccia appears at each table, fresh from the oven, warm and soft, with a thin, crackling crust. Going beyond traditional bread service, it’s presented with a trio of spreads, including a potent olive tapenade, which is perfectly balanced when paired with a smear of the sweet, nutty hummus or the roasted red pepper.

Medium to Loud. Lively conversations are everywhere you turn, making this spot the happening restaurant on Pier.
